Is a Locksmith Business Profitable? A Worked One-Van Month and What Moves It

Updated October 31, 2026

By Moni Mindich, founder, 20 years in home improvement

Most answers to this question give a margin percentage and stop. Here is a full month for one van, by job type, so you can see where the profit actually comes from.

Quick answer: Yes, a locksmith business is usually profitable when it does more than lockouts and answers its calls. In our worked one-van month (assumptions, not industry data), 107 jobs bring in $19,665; after parts and $5,640 of fixed costs, the owner keeps $8,510 before tax, about 43%, as their own pay. Lockouts bring the most calls; car keys and commercial work earn the most per job.

Is a locksmith business profitable? Usually, if you control three things

A locksmith business can be very profitable for its size: the van is the shop, the parts are small and cheap relative to the ticket, and a lockout is urgent enough that customers rarely shop on price. What decides whether yours is profitable is the job mix, how many calls you actually answer, and how much you pay for each lead. A one-van locksmith who mostly does $125 lockouts from paid ads works hard for thin money. One with rekey, car key and commercial work on top of the lockouts does much better with the same van.

Below is a worked month for a one-van mobile locksmith, then what moves the number up or down.

Worked example: one van, one month

Every number here is an assumption for illustration, not industry data. Put in your own tickets and costs; the shape is what matters.

LineHow it's worked outAmount
Residential lockouts45 jobs × $125 average ticket$5,625
Rekeys and lock changes30 jobs × $180 average ticket$5,400
Car keys and fobs22 jobs × $220 average ticket$4,840
Commercial service and hardware10 jobs × $380 average ticket$3,800
Revenue107 jobs$19,665
Parts, blanks, fobs and hardwareper-job cost by type (assumption)−$5,515
Van payment, fuel and maintenancemonthly (assumption)−$1,400
Insurance and licensingmonthly (assumption)−$450
Phone, software, key-programming subscriptionsmonthly (assumption)−$400
Advertising (Google Business Profile, local ads)monthly (assumption)−$2,500
Tools and blank stock replacementmonthly (assumption)−$300
Card processing fees3% of revenue (assumption)−$590
Owner profit before tax43% of revenue$8,510

That is $8,510 a month before tax, about 43% of revenue, and it is the owner's whole pay: there is no wage line above it and no second tech. Look at where it comes from. Lockouts are the most jobs (45) but only $5,625 of the $19,665. Car keys and commercial work are a third of the calls but earn the most per job ($150 and $230 after parts, against $110 for a lockout), because the ticket is higher and the time on site is often similar.

What makes a locksmith business more profitable

What makes one unprofitable

The three usual reasons are buying leads from aggregators who resell the same lockout to several locksmiths, driving long distances for $90 jobs, and having nobody pick up the phone during jobs. The first two are pricing and service-area decisions. The third is the one owners underestimate, because missed calls don't show up on any invoice.

Startup costs and break-even

A mobile locksmith can start with a van, a pick and tool kit, a rekey kit and a starter stock of locks and blanks, adding key-programming equipment once car key work justifies it. Check your state's licensing rules before you advertise, because some states license locksmiths and others don't. With fixed costs like the $5,640 a month in the example, break-even depends on margin per job: at the example's mix, the first 43 jobs of the month cover the fixed costs, and everything after that is profit.

Where Unmanually fits

Unmanually is a 24/7 AI Office Manager for locksmiths that you run by voice. It answers the lockout call at 2 a.m. or while you're on a job, gets the address and the situation, gives your price from your list, and books it or puts it in your queue. Afterwards it sends the invoice, follows up with the rekey offer and asks for the review. You approve before anything goes out. See Unmanually for locksmiths.

Common questions

Is a locksmith business profitable?

Usually, if the job mix goes beyond lockouts and calls get answered. In our worked one-van month (assumptions, not industry data), $19,665 of revenue leaves $8,510 before tax, about 43%, with car keys and commercial work earning the most per job.

What is the most profitable locksmith work?

In most shops it is car keys and fobs and commercial work such as master key systems and access control: fewer calls than lockouts, but higher tickets for similar time on site.

How much does a mobile locksmith make a month?

It depends on tickets, job mix and costs. Use the worked example's structure with your own numbers: revenue by job type, minus parts, minus fixed costs like the van, insurance, software and advertising.

Why do locksmith businesses fail?

Common reasons are paying aggregators for shared leads, driving too far for small jobs, surprise pricing that brings bad reviews, and missing calls during jobs and at night.

Turn the hours this takes into minutes of talking.

Home service businesses answer only about half their calls (Invoca, July 2026), and owners spend about 11 to 16 hours/week on admin. Knowing what to do is the easy part; the money leaks out in the calls you can't take, the quotes nobody chases and the invoices that sit unpaid. Unmanually is a 24/7 AI Office Manager for locksmiths that you run by voice from your phone:

  • Answers your business line 24/7, quotes from your price list and books the job on the live call, so the customer doesn't ring the next company on Google.
  • Sends the quote, follows up until they say yes, then sends the invoice and chases it until it's paid.
  • Texts confirmations and reminders, keeps your calendar and remembers every price and promise.
  • Plus a free website for your business, set up for you. On a plan, every form fill gets a call back from your AI Office Manager in about a minute.
