A plumber answering service is supposed to stop the burst-pipe call from going to the next plumber on Google. Most take a message. This guide works out what that costs per minute for a two-truck shop, lists what to ask any provider, and shows an example of a call that ends with a booked job instead of a note.
Quick answer: Live receptionist plans priced by the minute cost about $3.60 to $3.95 a minute at 100 to 200 minutes a month (Ruby, checked November 3, 2026), so a two-truck plumber with 175 minutes of calls pays around $720 a month. Before you sign, ask whether the service books the job into your schedule, triages emergencies, gives shut-off guidance, texts you the details and calls back missed leads, or only takes a message.

Plumbing calls are unusually urgent. A water heater leaking into a finished basement or a sewer backup will not wait for a callback tomorrow, and the caller is usually dialing down the search results until someone answers. There are a lot of plumbers to dial: the BLS counts 510,600 plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters, with about 42,000 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified October 29, 2026).
A traditional answering service answers in your company's name, takes the caller's name, number and problem, and sends you a message, sometimes with a rule for patching emergencies through to your on-call phone. That stops the voicemail problem. It does not, by itself, put the job on your schedule or tell the homeowner when you are coming, and the homeowner still might call the next plumber while waiting for you to call back.
Live receptionist services usually price by bundles of minutes. On its public pricing page today, Ruby lists 50 minutes for $250, 100 minutes for $395, 200 minutes for $720 and 500 minutes for $1,725 a month (Ruby pricing, checked November 3, 2026). The call volume below is an assumption for illustration; use your own phone records.
| Line | Assumption | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Calls the service answers a month | Calls you cannot pick up yourself, usually because you are on a job | 70 |
| Average call length | Name, address, problem, a few questions | 2.5 minutes |
| Minutes a month | 70 × 2.5 | 175 minutes |
| Plan needed | Next bundle above 175 minutes | 200 minutes, $720 |
| Cost per answered call | $720 ÷ 70 | about $10.29 |
| Cost per minute used | $720 ÷ 175 | $4.11 |
That can be worth it: if one in ten of those 70 calls is a $350 repair you would otherwise have lost, seven jobs a month is $2,450 of work. The catch is the next step. A message at 9:40 pm still needs you to call back, quote and book, and the caller is waiting with a towel on the floor.
For comparison, Unmanually is not an answering service; it is a 24/7 AI Office Manager. Its Growth plan is $99 a month billed monthly and includes 125 AI phone minutes, and Scale is $399 a month with 250 AI phone minutes (Unmanually pricing, checked November 3, 2026). The 175-minute month above fits in Scale.
Example, not a real transcript. This is how Unmanually's AI Office Manager handles the call for a plumber who has told it their emergency rules and first open slot.
| Who | What they say |
|---|---|
| Caller | Our water heater is leaking all over the basement floor. |
| AI Office Manager | Let's stop the water first. On top of the heater there is a cold-water pipe with a valve; turn it clockwise until it stops. If it is gas, leave the gas alone. Is the water slowing down? |
| Caller | Yes, it's slowing down now. |
| AI Office Manager | Good. What is the address, and roughly how old is the heater? |
| Caller | 14 Birch Lane. It's about twelve years old. |
| AI Office Manager | Thanks. Mike can be there at 7:30 tomorrow morning to replace or repair it. The emergency visit fee is on the confirmation I'm texting you now. Shall I book 7:30? |
| Caller | Yes, please. |
| AI Office Manager | Booked. Mike has your address and the heater details. If it starts leaking again tonight, call this number back. |
The plumber gets a text with the address, the heater age and the booking, not a message to return. Your rules decide whether a call like this books the morning slot or rings your on-call phone.
Unmanually answers and books plumbing calls 24/7, sends quotes and invoices and follows up on payments, and you run it by voice from the truck. Live receptionist plans priced by the minute ran from $250 for 50 minutes to $720 for 200 minutes a month on Ruby's pricing page on November 3, 2026, about $3.60 to $5.00 a minute. A two-truck plumber with 175 minutes of calls a month would need the 200-minute plan.
If it turns missed calls into booked jobs, usually yes: in our example, seven saved $350 repairs a month is $2,450 of work against a $720 plan. If it only takes messages, the caller may still book whoever calls back first.
Some can book into your calendar or field-service software; many only take a message. Ask to see exactly where a booking lands before you sign.
To close the main water shut-off or the valve on the leaking fixture first, then take the address and details. Get the provider's emergency script in writing.
Home service businesses answer only about half their calls (Invoca, July 2026), and owners spend about 11 to 16 hours/week on admin. Knowing what to do is the easy part; the money leaks out in the calls you can't take, the quotes nobody chases and the invoices that sit unpaid. Unmanually is a 24/7 AI Office Manager for plumbers that you run by voice from your phone:
Sources: Invoca, July 2026 (52% of home-service calls answered by a person, 60M+ calls); admin hours: Time etc / Censuswide 2023 and Amex SME Barometer 2026.
Unmanually is an AI Office Manager that works 24/7 and that you run by voice from your phone. Leave your mobile number and the AI Office Manager calls you right away, the same way it would call back one of your customers.
