Tree work is hard to price by the foot, which is why owners keep searching how to price tree removal jobs. The method most experienced estimators settle on is a loaded crew-day rate: know what your crew and equipment cost per day, judge what share of a day the removal will take, and price the extras separately.
Quick answer: Add up a full day of crew labor, truck, chipper, climbing or bucket equipment, dump fees and overhead, then add profit to get a crew-day rate. Estimate the fraction of a day the removal takes based on height, trunk size, lean, what it could hit, access and whether it must be rigged down. Price stump grinding, haul-off and cleanup as separate lines.

| Chip truck and fuel | per working day | $100 |
| Dump or green-waste fees | average day | $120 |
| Overhead share | insurance, office, marketing, estimating | $400 |
| Daily cost | $1,840 | |
| Crew-day rate at 20% profit | $1,840 ÷ 0.80 | $2,300 |
Illustrative numbers only. Tree-care insurance and equipment costs vary widely by region.
A large red oak, roughly 70 feet, leaning toward a detached garage, backyard access through a 10-foot gate. The estimator judges it needs to be climbed and rigged over the garage, about 60% of a crew day including cleanup and loading.
| Line | Calculation | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Removal | 0.6 × $2,300 | $1,380 |
| Stump grinding (separate crew visit) | your stump price by diameter | $250 |
| Wood haul-off | one extra load | $180 |
| Total quote | $1,810 |
If the same tree stood in an open field, it might be a quarter of a day. The crew-day method makes that difference visible to you and explainable to the customer.
For trimming, the same crew-day rate applies; estimate time by the number of trees, the type of pruning (crown cleaning, raising, reduction) and the cleanup. Avoid quoting "per tree" without looking, because one overgrown silver maple can eat half a day.
After a storm, trees on houses and cars need emergency response, and pricing is often by the hour with a crane or extra crew. Set your storm hourly rates in advance, and tell callers up front. Anything near power lines goes to the utility; that is not a pricing decision.
Property managers and HOAs often require a certificate of insurance before you start, and municipalities may require permits for removing certain trees. Put both on your quote checklist so jobs do not stall after the customer says yes.
Tree work prices surprise homeowners because they see one tree, not a day of crew time and equipment. Walk them through the factors that drive your number: what the tree could hit, how it will come down, how the wood leaves the property. Offer choices that change the price honestly, such as leaving the wood cut to firewood length or skipping the stump. A customer who understands why the job costs what it does is less likely to choose the cheapest bid from someone without insurance.
Estimates are won by the company that sends a clear number first, and that is hard when you are walking from one property to the next. Unmanually is a 24/7 AI Office Manager you talk to on the way: "Red oak over the garage, 0.6 day, add stump and one haul," and it builds the quote from your rates, sends it, requests the insurance certificate if the customer is an HOA, and follows up. It asks before anything that spends money. See what it does for tree service companies, or run the calculator to see the hours of estimating and invoicing it turns into minutes of talking.
Most estimate the share of a crew day the removal will take, based on height, trunk size, lean, what it could hit, access and whether it must be rigged, then multiply by a loaded crew-day rate and add stump grinding and debris handling.
Price it as a separate line so the customer can choose. Stump grinding is often a separate visit with different equipment.
Set emergency hourly rates for crew, crane and equipment before storm season and quote them up front. Anything near power lines is handled by the utility first.
Home service businesses answer only about half their calls (Invoca, July 2026), and owners spend about 11 to 16 hours/week on admin. Knowing what to do is the easy part; the money leaks out in the calls you can't take, the quotes nobody chases and the invoices that sit unpaid. Unmanually is a 24/7 AI Office Manager for tree service that you run by voice from your phone:
Sources: Invoca, July 2026 (52% of home-service calls answered by a person, 60M+ calls); admin hours: Time etc / Censuswide 2023 and Amex SME Barometer 2026.
