Best Handyman Business Software: How to Choose for a One-Truck or Small-Crew Business

Updated October 23, 2026

By Moni Mindich, founder, 20 years in home improvement

The best handyman business software is the one that fits how handyman work actually runs: four to six small jobs a day, each a different task, many quoted from photos, most paid on the spot. Lists that rank twenty apps by feature count miss that. Here is how to choose, with the main options compared on the things a handyman uses every day.

Quick answer: For most handyman businesses, a field service app that does quotes, scheduling, invoicing and card payments on the phone is enough, plus accounting software. Pick on four things: how fast you can build a quote with line items from a phone, whether the schedule handles several short stops a day, whether customers can approve and pay from a text, and the all-in monthly cost. None of these apps does the calling, chasing and rescheduling for you.

What makes handyman work different

A plumber or roofer does a few job types again and again. A handyman does a towel bar, a door adjustment, a drywall patch and a fence board in one afternoon. That means the software has to be quick at quoting small, mixed jobs, good at fitting short stops into a day, and simple enough to send an invoice before you leave the driveway. A $90 job that takes ten minutes of paperwork has lost a lot of its profit.

How to choose in one afternoon

  1. Time a real quote. Take last week's mixed job (say, mount a TV, replace two outlets with USB outlets and patch a doorknob hole) and build it in the free trial on your phone. If it takes more than three minutes, it will take longer in a customer's kitchen.
  2. Load a real day. Put five stops in the schedule with drive time. Can you move one with a drag and does the customer get a text?
  3. Send yourself an invoice and pay it by card from the text. Count the taps.
  4. Check your price list fits. Handyman pricing mixes hourly, flat-rate tasks and a minimum charge. The app needs all three. Our guide to pricing handyman jobs covers the methods.
  5. Add up the real monthly cost: base plan, per-user fees, payment processing and any add-ons you will actually turn on.

Worked example: what the paperwork costs a one-truck handyman

Stated assumptions: 20 jobs a week, 12 minutes of office work per job without software (writing the quote, texting to schedule, writing and chasing the invoice), 4 minutes with a good app, and your time valued at $75 an hour.

Without softwareWith a field service app
Office minutes per job124
Hours per week (20 jobs)4.01.3
Value of that time per month (4.3 weeks x $75)$1,290$430

Under these assumptions a good app saves about $860 a month of your time, which covers most plans many times over. What it does not save is the time on the phone: the calls you return at night, the customers who want to reschedule, and the quotes that need a nudge before they are accepted.

The work no handyman app does

Every app in the table waits for you to open it. Someone still has to answer the call while you are on a ladder, ask what the job is, get photos, book it into a gap in tomorrow's route, send the quote, and follow up when the customer goes quiet. Our free handyman pricing calculator helps with the numbers; the calls are the part that loses jobs.

Common questions

What is the best software for a handyman business?

For most handymen, a field service app that does quotes, scheduling, invoicing and card payments from a phone, plus accounting software. Choose by how fast you can build a mixed small-job quote and get paid from a text.

Do I need software as a one-person handyman?

Not strictly, but at 15 to 20 jobs a week the paperwork alone can take several hours. An app that sends quotes and invoices by text usually pays for itself in time saved.

Can handyman software answer my calls?

Most field service apps do not answer live calls themselves, though some now add AI call features. An AI Office Manager such as Unmanually answers, books, quotes after you set the price and follows up, alongside your app.

Turn the hours this takes into minutes of talking.

Home service businesses answer only about half their calls (Invoca, July 2026), and owners spend about 11 to 16 hours/week on admin. Knowing what to do is the easy part; the money leaks out in the calls you can't take, the quotes nobody chases and the invoices that sit unpaid. Unmanually is a 24/7 AI Office Manager for handyman businesses that you run by voice from your phone:

  • Answers your business line 24/7, quotes from your price list and books the job on the live call, so the customer doesn't ring the next company on Google.
  • Sends the quote, follows up until they say yes, then sends the invoice and chases it until it's paid.
  • Texts confirmations and reminders, keeps your calendar and remembers every price and promise.
  • Plus a free website for your business, set up for you. On a plan, every form fill gets a call back from your AI Office Manager in about a minute.
